"Story of the Door"

Throughout the book, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde, numerous moments give the readers an idea what they will be experiencing the rest of the book.  One moment that stood out to me when reading the chapter, "Story of the Door" was when Enfield is telling his story about the door to Mr. Utterson. He explained the man hard to describe and deformed I relate to that from reading Mental Illnesses in the 19th Century as my pre-reading.
I remember reading the chapter while Enfield explains his rare story he encountered. I keep in mind thinking how strange it was for people, including an 8 year old to be out at 3am. But people looked at the man weird because he bumped into the little girl. I can connect to this part of the story because I have judged many people before. Even though it`s not my place to judge how people act or dress, I still do. One thing I have judged before is, if I am out in public and I see a baby or a toddler out of control, I immediately assume their parents don’t take care of them right. I know this is wrong but it taught me a lesson on this first chapter. It shows that manners are very important in this time period, because all anyone cared about is how this man treated this little girl. Not that they were out at an outrageous time of morning.

  1. I agree with you, Cassie. I was also stuck by the fact that the girl was out at 3 am. It struck me as outrageous that no one cared about this. Also, I read the same pre reading as you and found most of the things you type about it were also relatable. Yes, manner seemed to be very important during this time period and the behavior of Mr. Hyde was really bad making everyone focus on that and not really the well-being of the child.

  3. I do agree with you.the weirdest part as Petroski said was that this little girl was out at 3 in the morning. also, when the parents find out that their daughter was trampled on and didn't take action and settled the deal with MONEY! now who in the h*ll does that now in our socirty we would take action.

  4. I completley agree with you. I mean come on this guy happen to bump into a little girl, thats pretty unexpeted at 3am in the morning. Maybe he could help her up but maybe he was in shock that her parents let her out this late, it seems to be that both sides are to blame!!But sireously, all these people cared about was whay Mr.Hyde did how he acted, they didnt once think that having this little girl out to begin with was a problem itself? It really shows how times used to be, OH easpecially if you could get a doctor at 3am to. Well overall the atmosphere has sure changed since now and then.

  5. I agree with you. Like what the heck is this girl doing out at this time of day? Anyways that chapter was very awkward in it's own way. For example the fact that there was a doctor at the scene of the crim in less than 30 minutes. Also the fact that Mr. Enfiled couln't describe the man was just like the pre-reading. but in the prereading it also said that people were treating unfairly just like the parents of the little girl treated the man that ran into her.

  6. I agree. I totally feel the same way as you do about the little girl running outside at 3 am. Society was way more different then it is now then it was back then.
